Transvaginal ultrasound

Transvaginal ultrasound, or sonography, is extremely useful in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility. This technique is useful in the evaluation of the pelvic structures, monitoring follicle growth, and assessing ovulation.

A transvaginal ultrasound is often recommended early in your infertility evaluation to assess you reproductive organs. Such abnormalities as uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, ovarian cysts, and endometriomas can be visualized with sonography.

Transvaginal sonography is also useful in evaluating ovarian function. The actual growth and development of the ovarian follicles (egg sacs) can be observed prior to ovulation, and the collapse of the follicle(s) can be observed with daily ultrasounds. In addition, the thickening of the endometrium can also be monitored.
