A native of Louisiana, Dr. Steinkampf received his MD degree at the
LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. His specialty training in Ob/Gyn
and Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility was received at Parkland
Hospital and the University of Texas/Southwestern Medical School in
Dallas, Texas. He has been board certified in Ob/Gyn and Reproductive
Endocrinology/Infertility since 1989. Previously, Dr. Steinkampf was Professor and Director of the Division
of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Alabama
at Birmingham (UAB), as well as the director of the IVF Program, the
Egg Donor IVF Program, the Reproductive Endocrinology Fellowship Program,
and the Reproductive Endocrinology Sonography Laboratory at UAB. Upon
his arrival to UAB, Dr. Steinkampf completely restructured the IVF program
to become one of the most successful programs in the country. He was
at UAB from 1987 to 2004 until he opted to establish Alabama Fertility
Specialists.
Dr. Steinkampf is the recipient of 29 research grants and has published
extensively in the medical literature. He is a member of the Medical
Advisory Board for the American Infertility Association, the world’s
largest infertility patient advocacy organization. Dr. Steinkampf has
been listed in The Best Doctors in America since 1994, and he has also
been recognized as one of Good Housekeeping Magazine’s Best Doctors
for Women. He received the 2003 National Family Building Award from
the American Infertility Association.
Karen Hammond has worked in Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1981
and in the field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility since
1985. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, she received her
undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Alabama School
of Nursing in Birmingham, Alabama. She is NCC certified as both an OB/Gyn
Nurse Practitioner and a Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility Nurse.
Previously, Karen was the nurse coordinator for the Division of Reproductive
Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Alabama at Birmingham
(UAB), as well as the IVF nurse coordinator and the manager of education
and outreach. In addition, she established the oocyte donation program
at UAB. She was at UAB from 1985 to 2004 until she opted to work with
Dr. Steinkampf in establishing Alabama Fertility Specialists.
A recognized leader in reproductive endocrinology and infertility nursing,
she has been an invited speaker and research presenter for numerous local,
state, national and international nursing and medical meetings.
She is the Chairman of the Board of Directors
of the American Infertility Association, the world’s largest infertility
patient advocacy organization. In addition, Ms. Hammond has published in
both nursing and medical journals, authored chapters in more than a dozen
medical textbooks, and recently edited a book on the Assisted Reproductive
Technology Team. She received the Sigma Theta Tau Award for Excellence in
Nursing Practice in 1990 and the Kirklin Clinic Circle of Excellence Award
in 2000.
Dr. Malizia is a reproductive endocrinologist practicing at Alabama Fertility Specialists,
a private fertility clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. A native of Montclair, New Jersey, she
graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University, where she was the recipient of the
Bonsal Foundation’s ‘Top Female Scholar-Athlete’ Scholarship. Dr. Malizia received her
medical degree from the University of North Carolina, where she was the recipient of an
NIH Research Training Grant and an International Medical Fellowship award. She
subsequently completed a residency in Ob/Gyn at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in
2005, during which time she won the Argus Medical Student Association Best Resident
Teacher Award and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons Resident Achievement Award. In
2008, Dr. Malizia completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center / Harvard Medical School. Much of her clinical
training was at Boston IVF, one of the largest in vitro fertilization programs in the
United States. The author of over 20 publications, Dr. Malizia’s research on in vitro
fertilization outcomes was recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the
nation’s premier medical journal.
Prior to her medical career, Dr. Malizia was a member of the Cornell University
Lacrosse team and then worked for two years at a large Wall-Street investment firm as an
analyst. She lives in Birmingham with her husband and three daughters.
